Mark McDowell - Freedom Tapes

The songs have a hypnotic cyclic nature and with a common or related note that is repeated throughout the chord structure. Simple riffs jammed along with the tracks were recorded into a flatbed cassette recorder and digitised for the studio.

This brought a fresh experimental approach to half written material at a time of uncertainty. Also feeding the mix were the civil rights protests that broke the isolation along with forays into fields and woods.

The poor quality of the cassette recordings were out of time and tune and had to be stretched into place producing extreme tape flutter, a sound nonetheless characterised by appealing warmth.

The album was completed in a two-week burst January 2022 including a freezing battery powered recording session in Ashton Court woods Bristol.
